Mission

Toward further development of materials science and technology, we, as a core institute in Japan, have been developing and sharing key-technologies of world top-level large facilities and cutting-edge equipments for making a break-through using the fabrication and analysis techniques.

We are providing a lot of opportunities to the oversea and domestic users to access such our facilities as high field magnets, contract beamline at Spring-8, high-voltage electron microscopes, various materials fabrication support tools, analysis support instruments and the equipments in nano-foundries.

Furthermore, to encourage wider use of new materials worldwide, we are trying to play a major role on materials researches by the continuous creating and updating of various materials data-bases, and by the generation and publication of materials data-sheets. These materials information is useful for researchers and engineers to choose proper materials and will results in the strengthening of intellectual infrastructures in Japan.

The High Voltage Electron Microscopy Station (HVEMS) has been established for the research and development (R&D) of HVEMs and related instrumentation for nano-characterization and study of material systems, and for utilization by users including those who are not specialists of TEM. The focus of the R&D is the dynamic observation of materials on the atomic scale, improvement in spatial resolution, advanced spectroscopic characterization of materials and, development of systems for remote operation and so on.

High Magnetic Field Station is known by the name of the Tsukuba Magnet Laboratory (TML). It is one of the largest high magnetic field facilities in the world. It became a user facility to external users in April 1998. We accept more than 80 collaborative studies a year with external research groups.

In order to improve safety and reliability of machine structures, we evaluate properties of structural materials and publish STRUCTURAL MATERIALS DATASHEETS on CREEP, FATIGUE, CORROSION, and STRENGTH of SPACE USE MATERIALS.
Quality management system of ISO9001:2000 has been introduced in 2002, into a materials data sheet program in conjunction with an entrusted creep test and an accident investigation, with the
purpose of improving data reliability and corresponding to society's needs.

This station was set up to support world leading research in NIMS from a view point of materials production. This station consists of Material Engineering Team (design and fabrication of research appliances, machinery shop, glass work) and Materials Manufacturing Team (melting, forging, rolling, heat treatment). In addition, in Manufacturing Team, some research facilities are open to use to promote collaborative research with third parties outside.

At Materials Analysis Station (MAS), we provide technical support for materials analysis and supply analysis information on various kinds of materials to all researchers in NIMS. We also develop new analysis methods with higher reliability and higher sensitivity, and carry out research on materials analysis with an aim for global standardization of analysis methods.
We aim to establish a basis for R & D of new materials and supply integrated information on materials analysis technologies.
